Drivers Beware: The Toyota UA80 Transmission Lawsuit Explained

Posted on July 28, 2026July 28, 2026 by legalteam

If you drive a modern Toyota Highlander, Sienna, or Lexus RX350, you might be sitting on a costly mechanical time bomb. Multiple class-action lawsuits allege that Toyota knowingly sold vehicles with defective UA80 eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Owners across the country report dangerous driving conditions, shifting delays, and premature transmission failure. Here is everything you need to know about the ongoing legal battles and whether your vehicle is affected.

What is the Toyota UA80 Transmission Defect?

The lawsuits target the UA80E (Front-Wheel Drive) and UA80F (All-Wheel Drive) eight-speed transmissions. According to court documents, these gearboxes suffer from a combination of mechanical and software design flaws that cause them to self-destruct prematurely.

The core issues include:

  • Severe Overheating: The compact design traps excessive heat. This burns through transmission fluid and destroys internal bearings and gears.
  • Aggressive Software Programming: The vehicle’s computer forces early upshifts and aggressive torque-converter lockups to artificially boost EPA fuel-economy ratings. This puts massive, unintended strain on the hardware.
  • Sudden Loss of Power: Drivers report hesitations, slipping gears, and sudden jerks, which create severe safety hazards when merging or accelerating.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The legal complaints focus on several popular models equipped with the UA80 transmission, including:

  • Toyota Highlander (2017–Present)
  • Toyota Sienna (2017–2020)
  • Lexus RX350 & other select Lexus models

What Do the Lawsuits Claim?

Plaintiffs argue that Toyota has been fully aware of the defect for years. The lawsuits point to hundreds of consumer complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Toyota’s own internal Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) as proof.

Despite this knowledge, the lawsuits allege that Toyota:

  • Refused to issue a safety recall.
  • Avoided covering repair costs for vehicles just outside the standard warranty window.
  • Left drivers stuck with repair bills often exceeding $5,000 to $8,000 for a total transmission replacement.

What Should You Do Next?

If you own one of the affected models, pay close attention to how your car drives. Common warning signs include a loud whining or buzzing noise from the engine bay, rough shifting, or a noticeable delay when you step on the gas pedal.

Be sure to keep all maintenance records, especially transmission fluid flushes and any receipts for diagnostic checks at the dealership, as these will be critical if you seek compensation or join a class-action settlement.
