The Ban and Its Roots

The story begins in the 1980s, a time marked by growing concerns over dog attacks. Pitbulls, a term encompassing the American Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and the American Staffordshire Terrier, found themselves at the center of controversy.

Originating from 19th-century Britain, these breeds were initially bred for blood sports. This violent history, coupled with a series of attacks in Denver, including a tragic incident involving a three-year-old child, led to a citywide ban in the late ’80s.

Turning the Page

Fast forward to January 2021, and Denver’s narrative took a significant turn. Residents voted to lift the decades-long ban, allowing up to two pitbulls per household. However, this freedom comes with a catch. Pitbulls are still labeled as “restricted breeds,” meaning owners must jump through a few hoops to ensure their furry friends can legally call Denver home.

The Path to Pitbull Parenthood

Owning a pitbull in Denver now requires a breed-restricted permit, a process that begins with an in-person evaluation by Denver Animal Protection. This 40-minute assessment aims to determine if your dog shares the physical characteristics of the restricted breeds.

If so, you’re on your way to obtaining that all-important permit, which must be renewed annually for three years. Stay incident-free during this period, and you could be exempt from future permits.

Visitors, Take Note

Even those just passing through Denver with their pitbulls need to be aware of these regulations. Without a permit, you could face fines, court appearances, and the heartbreak of potentially losing your pet.

Responsibility Remains Key

The lifting of the ban doesn’t absolve owners of their duties. Licensing, supervision, and humane restraint are still part of the deal. And if a pitbull does bite, the consequences are serious. It’s a stark reminder that while pitbulls can be loving companions, owners must be vigilant in preventing aggressive behavior.

A New Era for Denver and Its Dogs

Denver’s decision to welcome pitbulls back into the fold marks a significant shift in how we view these breeds. It’s a move towards understanding and responsibility, recognizing that with the right care and training, pitbulls can be as loving and loyal as any other dog.

For Denverites, it’s a chance to prove that their city is inclusive, compassionate, and safe for all residents, two-legged and four-legged alike.

As Denver embarks on this new chapter, the hope is that other cities will watch and learn. The story of pitbulls in Denver is more than just about a breed; it’s about giving second chances, about understanding, and ultimately, about love.

So, here’s to Denver and its pitbulls – may they thrive together in harmony.
